Backing out of our driveway last Saturday night, Tamara and I spotted an unfamiliar dog wandering around a new neighbor’s house. We knocked on the door and got no answer and tried to sweet talk this pup to us. He kept moving down the street so of course Tamara starts her foot pursuit. Knowing how this is going to end up, I go back to the house to get the treats she will need to coax this scared dog to her. When I catch back up to her the dog had wandered into a cul de sac and collapsed under a parked car. After about 10 minutes of coaxing and baiting him with food the little guy inched his way out from under the car.

He looked like a walking skeleton; you could see every bone in his body. He had deep puncture wounds on his rear right leg and was severely dehydrated. We got him back to the house, gave him some water and some food and got him settled into a cozy crate in our garage and turned the AC on.

The next morning we opened up the crate to get a better look at this poor little guy. He was so grateful and sweet and covered head to toe with ticks! I spent over an hour with tweezers pulling ticks out of his ears and around his eyes. We finally gave him a tick bath and saw hundreds of ticks falling off of him.

We named him RJ, short for Romeo Junior after our sweet Romeo who many of you have seen in classes. He is tick free, putting on weight and his wounds are just about all healed up. He is one of the sweetest dogs we’ve ever seen, he’s around 7 month old, loves other dogs, all people and even our cat. We’re looking for a forever home for him so if anyone is interested in this sweetie just give us a call at 602-954-8353.

There seems to be a mass confusion of the differences between a Therapy dog and a Service dog. In short; a Therapy dog is a dog who has been trained and has passed a test and therefore been certified by a certified evaluator with one of the Therapy dog organizations. A Therapy dog is a dog that visits hospitals, nursing homes, etc. to bring love and joy to those residents that can benefit in countless ways by a visit every week from an unconditionally loving canine.

A Service dog is a dog that has been professionally trained to aid and assist a person in tasks that they are not capable of performing without assistance. To these people their dogs are their lifelines, their saviors and their very best friend.

Please read this article from AKC regarding the amendment to the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) defining very clearly what a service dog is and what they are not. Many people are taking advantage of the priveledges that Service dogs receive and it is having a detrimental effect on “real” Service dogs and the people that rely on them.

Meet Denali, the newest addition to the Jaffe clan. Let’s just say it was an unplanned, “oops” baby for us. He is the same breed as Buddha and from the same breeder. Here is a great shot of the two new best friends. To think he’s going to be as big as Buddha! He is a real sweetheart, but a puppy none the less. He’s adjusting well to the whole clan and is loving his new raw food diet. He lost his first tooth yesterday, of course he swallowed it, so no putting it under the pillow and no visit by the tooth fairy…oh well.

We’ll keep you updated with photos as our new giant grows.
